Records of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, Rhode Island, 1715-1994.

Records in the collection document the functions of St. John's as both a diocesan religious center and a parish church. The bulk deal with St. John's as a parish rather than than as a cathedral. Records from the eighteenth century are scattered while those from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are fairly comprehensive. Materials include: annual reports of the parish and its various organizations; parish yearbooks; minutes of meetings; correspondence; Sunday School rolls; registers of Church Services; programs and news clippings relating to special events of the parish; the weekly newsletter, The Record of St. John's; documents relating to the two hundredth (1922) and two hundred-fiftieth (1972) anniversary celebrations; printed and holograph histories of various aspects of the growth and development of King's Church/St. John's; biographical sketches of parish notables including Gabriel Bernon, a principal founder of King's Church; pew records of rentals, ownership and transfers; financial account ledgers; bank statements; cash receipt and disbursement ledgers; payroll ledgers; donor lists; treasurer's reports; and photographs of parish people, buildings, and events (1868-1991). Of particular interest are records documenting the establishment of King's Church which include a letter from Gabriel Bernon to the Royal Governor of South Carolina (1722) and correspondence and account books of George Olney which document the construction of St. John's (1810-1811). Also of interest are records documenting the activities of the Rhode Island Diocesan Organization of the Girls' Friendly Society in America.
